Beskrivelse:
Liu's autobiography, translated from a manuscript which he brought to the United States right before the Tiananmen Square massacre, is an important primary source by China's leading dissident journalist. Liu joined the Communist party as a youth in 1944, but came to question party officials who tolerated no criticism and controlled every aspect of individuals' lives. In widely read articles such as "On the Bridge Construction Site" and "People or Monsters," Liu exposed corruption and party errors. After Tiananmen, Liu remains optimistic that "the Chinese people are one step closer to the freedom they have dreamt of . . . ." This detailed account, corroborated in Orville Schell's Discos and De mocracy ( LJ 5/15/88), documents the higher loyalty of Liu's title.
